Had a great meeting at the Pewsham Campaign Office, and we reflect on the performance of the previous nights Leader's Debate

Not such a sunny day, but an excellent team meeting in Pewsham before heading out on the campaign trail in Corsham.

I am sure many reflected on the previous night’s debate, and that I was not alone in seeing that Nick Clegg was out of his depth on the economy. He had the same style but offered no substance. And he failed to be straight with people on:

The Euro: he said he doesn’t advocate joining the Euro, but his Manifesto says we should.

Immigration: he said four fifths of people who come here come from the EU, but the independent figures show it’s less than a third.

An amnesty for illegal immigrants: he denied he supports an amnesty, but that’s exactly what his party proposes.

Welfare: he said people who refuse work shouldn’t get benefits, but his welfare spokesman says they should.

Whilst David Cameron launched his contract between the people and the Conservative Party, detailing what the Conservative Party will do for you if we win on Thursday. You can read the contract in full by clicking here

Having a interesting meeting with angler Martin Bowler in Chippenham and highlighting the dangers of a hung Parliament in Corsham

On another sunny Wiltshire day I met with my campaign team and fine tuned the final 2 weeks of the campaign. Then back out to meet folk in Melksham, before having a very interesting meeting with angler Martin Bowler.

The evening in Corsham further reinforced my belief that we need a strong government in this country, and that the differences between our parties are too great to reconcile to take decisions in the event of a hung parliament. In a hung Parliament the Lib Dems would be able to insist on their policies – so you need to know what they are:

they don’t support prison sentences for under six months – which would mean criminals like burglars and drug dealers would not be sent to prison;

they would join the Euro and allow European judges to extradite British citizens for an offence even if it is not a crime in Britain;

they say Labour’s jobs tax would kill jobs, but support it anyway;

they have not promised to protect the NHS budget;

they want an amnesty for up to 600,000 illegal immigrants; and,

they would scrap our Trident nuclear deterrent – and won’t say how they would replace it.

I recognise I am your local candidate here in Wiltshire, but your decision on May 6th will influence what happens in Westminster.

Today has again taken me across the constituency: Melksham, Paxcroft Mead, Bradford on Avon and Corsham.

I met Andrew Murrison over lunch to highlight the location of the new boundary in Paxcroft Mead to try and clarify any confusion caused in last week’s Wiltshire Times.

I was also delighted to receive the update from Jane Scott, Leader of Wiltshire Council, that further consultation will be carried out before decisions on building new homes around Chippenham are taken. If elected, I will be able to work even closer with the Council to ensure my constituents’ views are listened to.

What a great day in Wiltshire! I had breakfast with Sir Richard Needham and Shadow Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt. Next stop was Corsham Farmer’s Market, lots of excellent looking produce. On to the Pound Pill Arts Centre which is a very impressive arts venue. And our final stop in Corsham was the Sci Fi Fayre – don’t miss the pictures of this! Daleks, stormtroopers, ghostbusters – they were all there!

Over to Bradford on Avon to the Fairplanet Festival at Wiltshire Music Centre which was a super event. My team helped unload some bongo drums, but unfortunately we had to leave before I heard them being played. And it was a very cultural morning in Bradford on Avon as we then visited the International Festival at St Margaret’s Hall – another superb event and then around the town to meet some more people.

The afternoon we canvassed Melksham as well as visited the town centre – thank you to all my helpers today!

Today I met many local business owners who reinforced the reports in the Financial Times this week, that companies fear the prospect of a hung Parliament. Our economy, society and politics are all broken. Fixing them requires a stable government with the energy and ideas to get Britain moving. That’s why a hung Parliament would be risky for Britain. It means Gordon Brown could carry on as Prime Minister. It would also risk weak government, unable to take the tough decisions needed to cut our debt.

Many of these messages were reiterated last night on the TV debate – and I hope you found David Cameron’s closing words inspiring.

Thank you to all the team out in Melksham yesterday morning and Corsham yesterday afternoon with me – particular thanks to Giles Chichester MEP for coming to join the campaign trail.

My evening was spent in Cepen Park canvassing, then I returned to my home in Chippenham to watch the historic live TV debate – whatever other views you formed, most people I have spoken to confirmed they would not want 5 more years of Gordon Brown. Here in Chippenham we can take positive steps to prevent that – a vote for me on May 6th is one step away from Gordon!

My blog from day three of the campaign trail, today in Melksham and Corsham. I was joined by Theresa Villiers, Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, and Shadow Defence Minister and local MP Andrew Murrison to discuss Trowbridge Driving Centre and Corsham Station

What a beautiful sunny day in Wiltshire. This morning we met early shoppers in Melksham outside our lovely new Waitrose. I had to leave the team delivering (thank you for all your help!) for an interview with the Wiltshire Gazette & Herald before going to Corsham to meet Theresa Villiers, Shadow Secretary of State for Transport.

I had arranged for the campaigners to re-open Corsham train station to meet with her, alongside local councillors. Public transport in our mostly rural constituency is so important to help reduce our reliance of the car. I had already invited Network Rail to meet with councillors and campaigners last month, as well as Theresa, to ensure that Corsham Station remains front of mind.

Andrew Murrison, Shadow Minister for Defence, joined us at the Great Western Pub, Corsham with the campaign group to reopen Trowbridge Driving Test Centre. This is another local campaign I fully support. Andrew and I have worked on many initiatives over the 4 years I have lived in Chippenham. We are keen to ensure a seamless transition if I am elected on May 6th for his constituents who move to the new constituency of Chippenham at this election.

Thank you again to everyone who came out to help, if you would like to get involved or put up a poster please email wilfred4change@gmail.com

My blog from Day Two on the campaign trail in Bradford on Avon, Corsham and Chippenham

After an early morning in Bradford on Avon waving off commuters I then discussed local issues up and down the town centre. The Battle Bus then moved on to Corsham where I have again outlined how I am already working to get the train station reopened.

After a lunch at McDonalds, Chippenham where the team always look after us, the afternoon has been spent supporting the team leafleting across the constituency.

This evening has been a lively debate at Neeld Hall, Chippenham on the Climate Change Question. I outlined my own beliefs that sustainable communities are an essential part of tackling climate change. We need to reduce the power of the supermarkets and our reliance on them as this will in turn reduce our car usage. Where I live on St Mary’s St, the nearby Tesco Express, although very useful, does not provide everything I need in a weekly shop. I have no option but to get in my car and drive to one of the bigger stores on the outskirts of town.

If elected I will work and use my business experience, to revitalise town centres across the constituency and take steps to creating more sustainable communities in the towns and villages of Wiltshire.

This week I arranged for Network Rail to come down to discuss Corsham and to ensure that plans for the Station are progressing and still on track

This week I have been keeping plans on track for the reopening of Corsham railway station. I arranged to meet with Network Rail along with Councillor Dick Tonge, Councillor Peter Davis and other interested parties this Monday 8th March.

Network Rail advised at the meeting that the aspiration would need a fully-funded business case with backing from the industry to proceed. Councillor Dick Tonge explained “we are delighted that Wilfred has arranged this meeting today. It has clarified the railway industry’s policy. We now need to talk to First Great Western concerning the slots needed to accommodate Corsham. We have a number of other interested parties to approach all of which recognise the need for a station here in Corsham.”

I have been campaigning for Corsham station to be reopened since becoming the Conservative candidate. Corsham has a population exceeding 19,000 and still growing. Public transport links are essential as the town continues to expand. Local support for the new station remains high, and I will do everything I can to get the station reopened, inviting Network Rail down today to meet with the key parties involved is essential to understanding how the project could move forward.
