Councillor Elizabeth Kennedy and myself very much enjoyed our visit, but were dismayed to hear that their funding stream may cease. I have therefore volunteered to help with their new funding bid. I hope I may be able, in a very small way, be a good samaritan to them.

This week I arranged for Network Rail to come down to discuss Corsham and to ensure that plans for the Station are progressing and still on track

This week I have been keeping plans on track for the reopening of Corsham railway station. I arranged to meet with Network Rail along with Councillor Dick Tonge, Councillor Peter Davis and other interested parties this Monday 8th March.

Network Rail advised at the meeting that the aspiration would need a fully-funded business case with backing from the industry to proceed. Councillor Dick Tonge explained “we are delighted that Wilfred has arranged this meeting today. It has clarified the railway industry’s policy. We now need to talk to First Great Western concerning the slots needed to accommodate Corsham. We have a number of other interested parties to approach all of which recognise the need for a station here in Corsham.”

I have been campaigning for Corsham station to be reopened since becoming the Conservative candidate. Corsham has a population exceeding 19,000 and still growing. Public transport links are essential as the town continues to expand. Local support for the new station remains high, and I will do everything I can to get the station reopened, inviting Network Rail down today to meet with the key parties involved is essential to understanding how the project could move forward.

I am dismayed to still read the inaccurate reporting of the real issues surrounding the possible development of Bird’s Marsh

I am dismayed to still read the inaccurate reporting of the real issues surrounding the possible development of Bird’s Marsh. The only way to fully secure this area for future generations is to abolish the Regional Spatial Strategy that dictates the number of houses for Wiltshire. A Conservative government will abolish this and return these powers to Wiltshire from Westminster.

Following the debate in Council about future housing in Chippenham, Jane Scott, leader of the council, has issued the following statement to clarify the current situation.

“We are consulting in accordance with government guidelines which have to be followed about the possible location of housing in Wiltshire – the Wiltshire Core Strategy.

The Cabinet of Wiltshire Council agreed to this consultation being carried out but has not discussed the number of houses or proposed locations.

It is very important that anybody who has any concerns about proposals in this document should comment and provide evidence in support or opposition to the proposals.

Whilst we are still processing responses to the consultation, early indications suggest that an additional consultation will need to be undertaken in the Chippenham area, prior to the publication of the Draft Core Strategy and the final draft going to the Examination in Public.

If the council does not follow the guidance from the government, the Inspector can dismiss the proposals. This would leave a development guidance vacuum with the risk of sites being chosen by developers, rather than Wiltshire Council, thereby ignoring the views of local people to the detriment of Chippenham in the longer term.

The above is, of course, dependent on the Regional Spatial Strategy remaining in place which allocates the housing growth for Wiltshire and the rest of the South West. However, should there be a change of government in the months ahead, it is likely that a new process will take place to allow the number of houses to be built, and their location, to be determined more locally”.

On the 23rd February campaigners from the Friends of Bird’s Marsh handed in a petition to Wiltshire Council with over 2000 signatures in an effort to protect Bird’s Marsh.
Some Saturday shoppers may have been suprised to see my riding through Chippenham Town Centre last weekend, but it was only a small part of my day which was focused around answering locals' questions about development at Bird's Marsh

I think I may have surprised some Saturday shoppers on Chippenham High St by riding through the town centre on a shire horse! Frankie the shire horse is owned by Phil Newberry and has previously been used for children’s horse rides to raise funds for local charities.

The ride was entirely impromptu, I was offered the chance by Phil and took it on the spot.

I was out of the streets of Chippenham answering locals’ questions about the proposed development at Bird’s Marsh ahead of the Council meeting in Trowbridge this Tuesday. I have called for cross party co-operation to ensure Bird’s Marsh is preserved. The most important thing is that Chippenham gets the houses it needs in the places they are needed without damaging the fabric of the town. Chippenham needs consulting before areas such as Bird’s Marsh are damaged forever.

Local residents have been misled by certain individuals who have resorted to underhand and dishonest campaigning. I have therefore appealed to all local parties to work together to ensure that we get the right long term development plan for Chippenham.

Local Councillor, Peter Hutton, who also answered residents’ concerns on Chippenham High St at the weekend said “I have been working hard within the council to ensure that Birds’ Marsh is protected. So I was very concerned and annoyed that some individuals were claiming that the Council had plans to do otherwise”.

A Conservative government would abolish the Regional Spatial Strategy which is dictating the current discussions about house numbers and hand planning powers back from Westminster to Wiltshire.
